Yes it’s true, it’s time to find someone else. Someone who is better at this than me. Someone who’s got it all together. Find someone funnier, cooler, crafty….someone organized. Find someone who does something for ya! It’s come to this….and the search begins!
OH, I’m talking about finding someone, anyone but me to fill in for our amazingly talented Children’s Team Leader. Something about being 38 1/2 weeks pregnant and needing to squeeze out a baby thing. She knows I’m kidding and masking my panic with humor. She’s been great as has many before her, I say many and I can count four amazing team leaders who have taught our littles at Cowboy Church. But I sat in there with her the other day and saw just so much enthusiasm coming from this lady. When she talked, they listened! What the heck??!!… 3 year olds, 5 year olds, busy ranch boys there to have a “shoot out” all decked out in boots and stick guns. Busy kids and lots of them. No doubt, she has found her calling and has done a fantastic job…
Who will do it? Do I dive into phone calls and get lots of “I got to think about it”. “It’s a busy Summer filled with baseball and vacay”, “I’ve got to wash my hair that day”… the thought of it makes me break out with hives, or maybe that’s flea bites from mowing the yard yesterday.
So..I’m up! I’ve got to be honest folks, the first Sunday in there, I was checking the clock every 5 minutes, I even told my Cowboy Pastor Man to hurry it up a bit…yes, I believe I heard a loud clash of Thunder as the words came impetuously from my lips! “Shame on you, you church lady person!” You must now walk the childcare workers walk of shame and admit to all these people you’re a loser and they should tack up your picture with a caption reading…”Woman Who Refuses To Work With Anyone Below The Age Of Seven”…with a big X through it, of coarse.
I mean really, here’s what I’m thinking…we all come up with excuses and spiritualize it. We say things like…
- I’m not called to work in Children’s Ministry
- I need to pray about it….for like a year, or two, or maybe 15
- I’m not spiritual enough
- I’m waiting for God to move and then I will. Honey, He’s had the UHaul backed up to the door and you still drinking coffee at the kitchen table.
- I’m not a juice and cracker kind of guy. I actually stole this saying from another desperate Pastor’s Wife….
- That’s the Sunday I was gonna sleep in
- I’ve done my part
- That’s what they pay you for
Before anyone goes crazy and spurts “churchy” antidotes at me, let me explain……..
I will tackle the biggest one. I’m not called to work with children. And I would say, I agree….I’m not either. I’m called to sing badly, wear a church robe, pound an organ, and gossip….isn’t that what all pastor’s wives do? NO….people…just NO!
I agree we all need to find our sweet spot, use our gifts and talents to serve but too often we use it as an excuse to do no work at all…not that I’ve ever done that. You may not like to work with the homeless but when there is a need, it trumps our area of “service”. We don’t want anyone who is not “called” to work with kids to step in there and be rolling cigarettes and throwing darts but we do want someone to roll up their sleeves and serve our kids or clean the church, or build a stage, or be on the Arena Team. We can do this through numerous avenues.
IN closing…some may be saying..”thank God”…I’m feeling a bit convicted and I don’t like it one bit…not one bit! But I can’t leave you thinking it’s been down hill for me and the kids. What we lack God provides. After a month of Sundays with the kiddos, I’m laughing at how God works this thing out. One very polite little cowboy ran up to me at church, he was anxious to hear about Jesus! Yeah..I pretty much melted! And that night I could hardly sleep thinking about all the cool things I could do…I was almost giddy! Plus, I’ve got to add…I’ve had two people randomly step in there with me to help! Okay…you got this God…like always!
So this Sunday…We will be branding! No not your kids but leather or wood and be talking about the Sword of the Spirit! How does that relate…believe me…it’s a Cowboy Culture thing…it’s gonna be funner than watching someone riding a new colt in the branding pen.
So what do you feel is the biggest need around you right now? How can you help out? I know that even when we can’t figure the darn thing out, we just have to move in that direction and just like that….He’s got it!
Thank ya’ll for reading….thecowboypastorswife
