Being a Cowboy Pastor’s Wife, I recently found myself counting people who came to church on Sunday mornings. I have to be honest, I was measuring the success of our church based on a number and it was sucking the life out of me. I’d do a happy dance when people were there and ride home in silence if the numbers were low. My fail gage was based on the decisions of others and feeling that I had perhaps failed them. Week after week I would go through the list of absentees and bang my head! I doubting myself as a pastor’s wife.
That was until I came across the story of Gideon. He was instructed to cut down his huge army of 33,000 men to only 300.
You see, God was going to do something in the most unlikely way. The enemy who had ravished their land, stole their groceries, and had driven them to live in caves, was about to make a deposit in their account.
I don’t know why I always think I know what God’s gonna do? I usually get it wrong and it turns out much better than I could have imagined. I have noticed that often He answers in a way I was never expecting. That’s when I know it’s God and not by my own doing.
That’s how Gideon led 300 men to surround a camp, with lanterns and trumpets. The enemies confusion caused them to turn on themselves.
They only had to trust and follow. They had to turn to God and not to their own strength.
We may never have a huge church. Friends may come and friends may stop attending. That doesn’t stop me from being their friend. I am here to do the best I can and expect God to do what only He can. My self reliance often points to me. But when I point others to God they won’t be disappointed. He offers more than I could on my best days.
So what about you? Do you ever find yourself trying to make something work but it’s just not budging? And then you finally leave it to God and see Him answer in the most uncommon way. Right now, we need more Gideons and right now we need God even more!
Thank you for reading,
