One of our favorite things to do is to find our family Christmas tree. We begin the search early in the year, while out making feed runs or looking for cattle. We spy her, the perfect Christmas tree, Pinon Pine. With horses loaded, we travel until we run out of ranch road, the rest of the track made horseback. We think we see the perfect one…….it always looks small until you get right up to it and then you discover it won’t even fit in the house. Cut with a small saw, packed horseback, the tree in drug back to the truck. Hot cocoa and coffee waiting in a thermos after we load our treasures.
The tree, the tradition for Christians represents an evergreen tree. A Pinon Pine, like an evergreen doesn’t lose it’s green. The “ever” lasting green represents eternal life, through Jesus Christ. This simple tradition helps us slow down, appreciate the gift of Christ, and to talk about God’s gift throughout the month.
You may not have access to cutting down your own tree. You may not even have the room for a tree, if you are limited on space. Whatever the circumstance, here are some simple ways to talk about Christ while you decorate your tree:
- The lights
Talk about Jesus being the LIGHT of the world. You could even hang those lights in the shape of a tree on the wall.
- The Ornaments that tell a story,
Here’s an advent idea that you could use, the Jesse Tree. Each Scripture reading correlates to a particular ornament that you hang on the tree, throughout the month of December. You can follow the link to learn more.
* I love this idea for kids and for conversations with guest as they’re in your home. I tried this last year but didn’t give myself enough time to get it all together.
Here’s a few more ways to include scriptures on your tree. My favs from Pinterest. You can click on links below each picture.

- The Star on top
Perfect opportunity to read about the star in the east, Matt. 2:2. The wise men followed the star to find the awaited Savior, Christ the Lord.
These are just a few ideas to get you started as you begin to think about decorating your “Christ”mas tree. Hope you find a good one and your horse doesn’t get the rope caught under his tail.
